Chapter 1.
Cherish finally arrived at her farm and a weight lifted off her shoulders as she breathed in the air. It was so different from the air in Lancaster County. She was home.Â
She, along with her mother, Bliss and Favor, had stopped along the way to visit Simon Koppel, Cherishâs potential boyfriend, whom she'd met at Hope's wedding. He lived with his parents and they were there too. The Koppel threesome were arriving at the farm tomorrow and were planning to stay a few days. The way their brief visit with them had played out, Cherish had left wondering how theyâd all survive in the same house for days.
Malachi, Cherishâs farm manager, had come out of the house to meet Cherish and her family members with his new friend. The friend was a gooseâa real one. Cherish wasnât really surprised, not after Malachi explained he didn't consider a goose the same as the chickens about which he had a lifelong phobia. Nothing about Malachi surprised her anymore.Â
The goose, whose name was Wally, followed him everywhere and much to Wilmaâs disapproval, the goose even followed him into the house.Â
âSo what is this with the bird in the house, Malachi?â Wilma asked.
âItâs a goose,â Bliss and Favor said at the same time.
A giggle escaped Cherishâs lips.Â
Wilma lifted her chin. âIâm always corrected, even when Iâm not wrong. Do you know what the girls have done to me, Malachi? At home, we have two birds, a dog, and a rabbit in my house when I donât want any animals in the house at allânot one. They know this and they donât care.â
âDonât worry, Wilma. Wallyâs housetrained.â Malachi leaned down and rubbed Wallyâs neck.
Then Mamm crouched down and studied the goose. âHow can a wild animal be house trained? Oh dear, help me up, Cherish.â Wilma held up her arm and Cherish pulled her to her feet.Â
âStop worrying, Mamm,â Cherish told her. âMalachi wouldnât say he was housetrained if he wasnât.â
Malachi smiled as he explained, âWally isnât really wild anymore. Heâs tame. He goes to the door if he wants to go out. He does what he needs to do and then he comes back in.â
Wilmaâs lips turned down at the corners. âIâll see it when I believe it.â
The girls laughed at her.
âWhatâs funny?â Wilma looked at each one of them.Â
âYou said it the wrong way around,â Favor told her. âYou mean, youâll believe it when you see it.â
âThatâs what I said.â Â
âNo, you didnât.â Bliss tried to stifle her giggles.Â
Wilma sighed. âIâm tired from the long car ride and from you girls constantly belittling me.â
The smile left Blissâs face. âIâm sorry, Mamm. We donât mean to do that.â
âWe wonât do it again,â Favor added. âI agree with Bliss. We didnât mean to do that.â
âGood because itâs tiring. The food smells good, Malachi. What do you have on the stove?â Mamm asked.
âI made us a beef stew for dinner and Iâll be cookinâ mashed potatoes and beans to go with it.â
âIt does smell delicious,â Bliss said.Â
âThanks.â
An hour later, Mamm and the girls were peeling the potatoes and stringing the beans. They wouldnât let Malachi do anything, telling him heâd done enough in making the stew. Malachi sat down at the kitchen table with them, drinking coffee while they worked.
âI wonder how Debbie made out today with her tea,â Bliss said.Â
Mamm looked up at the ceiling. âThatâs right. She was going to the tea expert.â
Cherish couldnât stop worrying about her birds and her dog. âI hope Matthew remembered to feed Tommy and Timmy.â
âWhatâs Timmyâs friend like?â Malachi asked.
âTommy? Heâs pretty much like Timmy, but he doesnât talk yet. Timmyâs getting so good at talking.â
âWhat does he say?â Malachi asked.
âNearly everything. Whatever you want him to say.â
âThatâs not so, Cherish.â Favor went on to tell Malachi exactly what few words Timmy could say, including the words he tried to say, but werenât too clear.
Cherish sat there, wondering if she shouldâve left Favor at home. Her sister had embarrassed her just now. What if she did that when Simon and his parents were here? The only thing to do was to have a talk with her. Hopefully next time, sheâd close her mouth.
Cherishâs opportunity came when Malachi went outside to fetch some more firewood. âFavor, please donât say Iâm wrong in front of people. It sounded like I was lying or exaggerating.â
âWhat do you mean?â Favor asked. Cherish didnât waste time telling her exactly what she was upset about.Â
âOh that. Iâm sorry. I didnât know it would make you upset, and you really were exaggerating. Everyone knows Timmy canât talk that well.â
âIf I do anything like that againâŚâ
âYes?â
âKeep your mouth closed.â
âI agree,â Wilma said. âIf itâs not your conversation, Favor, keep out of it.â
Favor sighed. âOkay. I am sorry, Cherish.â
Cherish breathed out the air sheâd been holding on to and then nodded to acknowledge Favor's apology. That had gone a whole lot easier than sheâd expected it would.
âItâs nice that you girls are getting along so well, and youâre able to sort out your differences in a mature way. I think weâre going to have a lovely time here at the farm.â
âWe will, Mamm,â Bliss assured her.Â
Favor got up and looked out the window. âItâs funny how that goose follows him everywhere. It makes Malachi look intriguing, donât you think? If I didnât know him and I just saw him walking down the street with Wally, Iâd want to get to know him.â
Everyone stared at Favor and no one said anything.
Favor kept talking. âWell, thatâs what I think. No one has to agree with me. Iâm used to being the odd one out. I was probably adopted.â
âNo, you certainly were not! I gave birth to you, suffered in agonizing pain for several hours. You didnât want to come out.â
âSorry, I didnât mean it. Itâs not my fault. I couldnât help it. I donât even remember it.â
Mamm made a face. âIâm just saying you arenât adopted.â
âFavor knows that. She looks too much like the rest of us,â Cherish said.Â
Bliss finally joined in the conversation. âI know what Favor means, saying a man being followed by a goose would look interesting and intriguing. For me, no man looks interesting. Thereâs only one man in my heart. Well, there was.â
Mamm leaned over and put her arm around Bliss, who was sitting beside her. âYouâre here to forget about Adam. Donât go thinking about him for at least three days. Can you do that?â
âIâll really try. Itâll be hard because heâs always on my mind, and in my heart. I will try to forget, thatâs all I can do.â
âGood.â Mamm rose to her feet and then headed over to the stove and stirred the stew. âIt smells delicious. I canât wait to taste it.â
âThanks for allowing us all to come, Mamm,â Cherish said.Â
âI know how you love it and I do try to let you come here once a year. Just donât get too used to it. Iâll be happy if you wait a few years before you move here permanently if thatâs what you decide to do.â
âI know. Iâll think about it.â
âDo you mean, âweâll see?â Thatâs what Mamm always says when she means that she wonât think about what we asked her and the answer is most likely no.â Favor giggled.
Cherish laughed at what Favor said and even Bliss managed to curve her lips upward.Â
Mamm lifted her chin. âI hardly ever say âweâll see.â I donât know what youâre talking about, Favor. First you say youâre adopted and then you go putting words into my mouth. Whatâs gotten into you?â
âYes, you do say 'weâll see,'â Favor said.
âYou do, Mamm,â Cherish told her.
âI see whatâs going to happen here. Everyone is going to make fun of me and tell the Koppels unkind stories about me.â
âNot everyone will do that,â Favor said. âIâm sure Bliss wonât and Malachi wonât.â
Cherish laughed, pleased that Favor was in such a fun and playful mood. She used to be like this before Krystal came to stay with them. Then she turned moody and sullen when Krystal left.Â
âThe Koppels wonât think much of you if you make fun of me,â Mamm warned.
âTheyâre joking,â Bliss told Mamm.
âI hope so.â
âThey are, donât worry. Theyâre only teasing you. Arenât you? Tell her.â Bliss looked at Favor and then looked over at Cherish.Â
Cherish huffed. âI like the way Iâm dragged into this when I havenât said anything at all. Itâs all been Favor.â
âYou laughed with me.â Favor poked her shoulder.Â
âI might have been laughing at you.â Cherish pouted.
âYou were laughing with me. Stop it,â Favor said. âYouâre always making excuses as well as exaggerating and telling half-truths.â
âBoth of you make up with each other,â Bliss told the pair of them. âWe all need to have this time away to clear our heads.â
Favor and Cherish looked at each other. âIâm glad youâre finally here at the farm, Favor.â Cherish hugged Favor, and Favor hugged her back.Â
âIâm pleased too. Letâs not argue. Letâs just agree that Iâm always right because I always am.â Favor giggled again and Cherish laughed along with her.Â
âOkay. Youâre always right. Just donât embarrass me and weâll get along fine.â
âGood. Now letâs get on with it,â Mamm said just before she sneaked a taste of the stew.
